How to Maximise Space in Your Bedroom Cupboards

How to Maximise Space in Your Bedroom Cupboards

If you’re considering creating your dream wardrobe, it makes sense to start by assessing your built-in cupboard situation. If the room you’re working in is quite small, you may have limited space for your cupboards.

However, that doesn’t mean you can’t use the space effectively. There are many ways to make the most of whatever closet space you have.

Evaluate Your Needs

Before you get started on renovating or adding to your bedroom cupboards, you should think about what kind of space is most valuable to you. For example, adding additional hanging rails provides more space for hangers, but that won’t be helpful if you prefer to fold most of your clothes.

Assess the items you store in your cupboards, and determine which type of storage will work best.

Add Shelves

If you have a lot of empty space in your cupboards, adding shelves is a great way of filling up the space, adding additional storage, and helping you keep your closet organised.

Depending on your bedroom cupboard setup and your preferences, you could add additional shelves below, above, or to the side of your hanging rail.

Adding internal drawers to your cupboard could be convenient, but drawers tend to have less packing space than shelves, so if you’re trying to maximise your space, opt for shelves instead of drawers. You can also consider using or making drawer dividers to keep the space organised.

Double Rails

Many people find that their cupboards have enough packing space, but that they’re lacking in hanging space. If you only have one hanging rail, the chances are that there’s a lot of wasted space below it.

As mentioned, you can turn this into a shelving area, but another alternative is to add an additional hanging rail. This will double the space you have for hanging shirts and pants.

Build Your Cupboards to the Ceiling

If there’s a gap between the top of your closet and your ceiling, that’s precious space that’s being wasted. Consider upgrading your cupboards so that they go from floor to ceiling, using every bit of available space.

Of course, the items you store at the top of your closet won’t be as easily accessible, but it’s a great storage location for lesser-used items, such as seasonal clothes or items you don’t reach for every day.

Customise Your Set Up

Once you know what type of storage is most valuable to you and how to maximise that type of storage, it’s time to look into ways of implementing it.

You have two options here: you can either completely redo your built-in cupboards, or upgrade the existing ones. If you decide to opt for new custom cupboards, you get full control over how they are laid out, as well as aesthetic elements like colour choice.

If you upgrade your existing cupboards, your options might be limited, but you may be able to install additional shelving or hanging rails.
